This is the time of year when we start to prepare for our beekeeping classes. Vin and I are on the committee for the ECBA bee school. We also teach classes at North Shore Community College and at Crystal Bee Supply. Right now, the schedule looks like this: from February sometime until mid April, every Monday 7-9 PM, Tuesday 7-9 PM, Thursday 7-9PM and Sat 2-4pm. It is a busy time. The classes fill up quite quickly.  Essex County’s bee school has 65 students and always sells out early. The classes we hold at our store only have up to 12 students each class. We like small groups for more individual attention. We are about half filled up already. If you really want to take a beginning beekeeping class, sign up soon. I do give crash courses in April and May. But learning about beekeeping before you have the bees is a much better way. But if you can’t get in at any bee school anywhere, call us at Crystal Bee Supply and we can try to see what we can do for you. We are getting a bunch of calls at our store about beekeeping classes, beginner kits and packages of bees as Christmas gifts.

I advise that if you are thinking about giving the beekeeping as a gift, make sure the person really wants bees. You can’t really return them. Its kind of like giving someone a 200 lb Saint Bernard as a gift. Well, not really. But you get the point. The people who received beekeeping as a gift last year were all really excited to start beekeeping. The youngest student was William. He was 11. I didn’t ask the older people how old they were. But their hair was fairly white. So, beekeeping can be a great new hobby for anyone, young or old.
